Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho defends Manchester City boss

Jose Mourinho spoke out in defence of underfire Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini ahead of welcoming rivals United to Stamford Bridge on Saturday Night Football.

The Blues are seven points clear of second-placed Arsenal and 12 points clear of holders City, who are fourth, entering this weekend's fixtures.

Chelsea's boss says the media wants numerous teams to fight for the title, but then pounce on perceived failure.

"I'm not surprised because it can happen to anyone," said Mourinho, when asked about City's run of four wins in 12 league games.

"Every game is difficult. What I'm surprised about is that a team that won two titles in three years, a team that are still champions and won two trophies last season, you (the media) can bring this team to hell.

"It looks like they don't deserve respect, that they are bad players, that the manager is a bad manager, that they are a disaster. And they are the champions. I don't understand.

"So how can you be so negative with a team that's won two titles in three years? Okay, they won't win this title this year, but they did last year.

"Some clubs and managers can not win and life goes on, but the guys at Man City - it looks like they're criminals because they don't win the league."

QPR's fight to stay in Premier League will go to the last match, says Gerry Francis

Former QPR manager Gerry Francis believes their fight to stay in the Premier League will go down to their last match against Leicester.

Francis, who managed QPR from 1992 to 1994 and then again from 1998 to 2001, believes results are so unpredictable in the last few weeks of the Premier League season that Rangers’ campaign to stay in the top flight will go down to the wire.

“It could all go down to the last week – they’re away to Leicester in the last game of the season there – and I expect it to be very, very close and go to that last game of the season,” the former QPR captain told Sky Sports News HQ's Morning View.

“Last year Sunderland went to Chelsea and won to get out if it (the relegation battle). So it’s very difficult to say how it’s going to go and you never know what the results are going to be, which is what makes the Premier League so exciting.

Stewart Downing says Dubai trip can help West Ham in Premier League

Stewart Downing expects a warm-weather training trip to Dubai to pay off for West Ham in the closing stages of the Premier League season.

Sam Allardyce and his West Ham squad have spent a long weekend in the United Arab Emirates, recovering from 15 matches in all competitions since the league defeat at Chelsea on Boxing Day.

West Ham face the first of their remaining 10 league games at Arsenal on Saturday, and England winger Downing says the Dubai experience was a much-needed addition to their schedule.

Tim Sherwood backs Charles N'Zogbia to improve further at Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood insists Charles N'Zogbia can reach another level with his performances.

Sherwood says Aston Villa are already starting to reap the benefit of extra work on the training ground by N'Zogbia.

And Sherwood has been pleased with the former Newcastle and Wigan winger's approach since his appointment as manager.

Sherwood began his time at Villa with Premier League defeats to Stoke and Newcastle, before league and FA Cup victories over West Brom.

And Frenchman N'Zogbia started for Villa in both wins over their west Midlands rivals.

"Charles has done well," said Sherwood. "I spoke to him after the Newcastle game and I just said to him 'I've got a long memory, I know how good you were in the team at Wigan'.

"I know what he possesses and I know how scared opposing managers are when he's playing.

"If he gets himself flying, he can be anything he wants to be. I really mean that.

"He needs to keep getting himself fit. I told him he needs to be a little bit fitter and he needs to do a little bit extra than the other players and he said 'no problem'.

"He's doing running, he's on the bench, he's a grafter.

“I think we needed a break. We had a lot of games with the FA Cup and obviously the Premier League. I hope it will help us to end strongly and do better than we did last year and finish in the top 10 if we can.

“The team bonding part of it is good for the lads and it’s nice for the new boys to get involved with the lads too.”

Downing says that West Ham are determined to achieve a positive result against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium after a 2-1 defeat to Arsene Wenger's team at Upton Park on December 28.

“We owe them one, as I think we should have beaten them at home,” he said.

“It’ll be a tough game, but we can go there with confidence because on our day we’re a decent team.”
